Since NPCI opened the UPI rails to RuPay credit cards in late 2022, the fastest-growing category in Indian cards is the one that looks and feels like a debit card. Scan the QR at your kirana, tap "Pay", and the transaction settles on your credit line — rewards, grace period, and all. By early 2026, HDFC RuPay, IDFC FIRST Classic, and similar RuPay variants from nearly every major issuer support UPI out of the box.
Below are the four cards we recommend for UPI-heavy spenders in 2026, plus the ground rules every user should know before enrolling.
1. HDFC RuPay Credit Card — the default UPI pick
The HDFC RuPay Credit Card is engineered for UPI from day one. After you link it inside Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm, every scan-and-pay earns reward points at 1% on UPI QR spends, waived 1% MDR on merchants up to ₹2,000, and zero foreign-transaction fee on RuPay international spend.
- Joining & annual fee: ₹0 — lifetime free variant available.
- Best for: people who want credit on every QR scan without changing their daily app.
- Watch out: NPCI caps merchant-discount-rate-bearing transactions at ₹2,000; bigger swipes earn only base rewards.
2. IDFC FIRST Classic Credit Card — best lifetime-free RuPay card
The IDFC FIRST Classic is available in a RuPay variant that registers seamlessly with UPI. It pairs the parent card's never-expiring reward points, 4 complimentary railway lounge visits, and low 9% interest with UPI-scan earnings at 3X on online partner QRs. For a no-fee card, this is the best combination of RuPay + rewards in the market.
3. Axis MyZone RuPay Credit Card — best if you already bank with Axis
The Axis MyZone RuPay pays 4 EDGE points per ₹200 on UPI spends, with a welcome voucher on first use and dining discounts at 5,000+ partner restaurants. The ₹500 fee is waived on ₹50,000 of annual spends — modest for any UPI-first household.
4. Bajaj Finserv EMI Credit Card — best for EMI-heavy UPI users
The Bajaj Finserv EMI Credit Card runs on RuPay and converts UPI spends above ₹3,000 into no-cost EMIs at 1.5 million Bajaj partner merchants. It is less a rewards card and more a cashflow tool — ideal if you use UPI to pay offline retailers for mid-ticket purchases.
How UPI-on-credit actually works
When you scan a merchant's QR, the UPI app routes the transaction through NPCI like a normal debit. The difference is that the source of funds is your credit line, not your bank balance. The bank charges you on the statement cycle, exactly as it would for a physical swipe. Grace period, reward points, and billing rules are unchanged.
Two gotchas worth knowing:
- Merchants above ₹2,000: From January 2024, NPCI allowed banks to levy MDR on credit-card UPI above ₹2,000 at "big" merchants (annual turnover > ₹50L). Some merchants quietly pass this back to you via surcharge. Check before scanning.
- Peer-to-peer is blocked: UPI-on-credit works only for merchant payments (P2M). Sending money to a friend's UPI ID still uses the bank balance linked in the app.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do all credit cards work on UPI in India?
No — only RuPay credit cards are currently enabled on UPI. Visa and Mastercard variants cannot be linked inside Google Pay or PhonePe for payment. Some issuers (HDFC, ICICI, Axis, Kotak) offer a dedicated RuPay variant; others still do not.
Does paying through UPI earn the same rewards as a swipe?
Usually yes — for QR scans below ₹2,000. Above that threshold some issuers reduce the rate to the "utility" tier. Check your card's T&C; the HDFC RuPay and IDFC FIRST Classic keep full rewards on UPI.
Can I send money to a friend via UPI using a credit card?
No. Credit-card-on-UPI is limited to merchant payments (P2M). P2P transfers still pull from the linked savings account.
Are UPI credit spends counted toward the annual fee waiver threshold?
Yes. UPI transactions are regular retail spends and count in full toward any fee-waiver milestone, including statement-credit thresholds.
